For the past eighteen years, I’ve been a self-employed technology analyst and author, specializing in enterprise security and the owner/sole proprietor of TACteam. I’m the author of or contributor to over 25 books, including “Scene of the Cybercrime” published by Syngress and “Computer Networking Essentials” published by Cisco Press. For the past fourteen years, I’ve been awarded the Microsoft MVP, and I’m married to Microsoft FTE Tom Shinder.

Prior to getting into IT writing, I was a police officer and a course coordinator and instructor at the North Central Texas Regional Police Academy and lead instructor in the Eastfield College Criminal Justice Training program. I’ve served as an elected and appointed official at the municipal level and have published law enforcement articles and political commentary.

I’m the proud mom of two wonderful grown-up human children and three amazing Japanese Chin pups. I’m a fourth generation Texan and my home base has been the DFW area for most of my life (except for a couple of very brief periods when I resided in California in the 1970s and Arkansas in the 1990s).

In my spare time, I enjoy reading, taking long walks, photography and graphic art, classical and instrumental jazz music. I’ve written songs, built computers, and delivered babies (as a midwife’s assistant). The common thread that has run through my life and my many diverse interests is my compulsion to capture it all in writing. Like most who are born with the writing bug, I have a cache of unpublished short stories and a couple of unfinished novels nestled in my file cabinets and on my hard drives.

It wasn’t until I got older that I discovered how much I love to travel – especially on cruise ships – and of course I also love to write about my grand adventures. This has led me to a new direction in my career and this web site and blog are one of the manifestations of that.
